(AmericanPoliticalDaily.com)- First came the temporary restrictions on funds. Now comes a complete sever of ties.
President Donald Trump made the announcement late last week that the United States will cut all ties with the World Health Organization. Trump has consistently criticized the organization for how it handled the coronavirus outbreak, and for being influenced strongly by China.
As Trump said:
“China has total control over the World Health Organization despite only paying $40 million per year compared to what the United States has been paying, which is approximately $450 million a year. The world needs answers from China on the virus. We must have transparency. Why is it that China shut off infected people from Wuhan to all other parts of China? It didn’t go to Beijing. “It went nowhere else, but they allowed them to freely travel throughout the world, including Europe and the United States.”
Because the WHO “failed to make the requested greatly needed reform,” Trump said the United States “will be today terminating our relationship with the World Health Organization and redirecting those funds to other worldwide and deserving urgent global public health needs.”
That last part is especially important. It shows the U.S., and Trump, are very much interested in, and concerned for, global health initiatives. They just aren’t in favor of the WHO and how the organization has done things.
Back in April, the U.S. temporarily halted the funding it sends to the United Nation’s entity every year as the country reviewed the WHO’s “role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus.”
On April 14, he even hinted at possibly withdrawing from WHO membership altogether. He wrote a letter to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the general-director of the WHO, saying if the organization “does not commit to major substantive improvements within the next 30 days, I will make my temporary freeze of United States funding to the World Health Organization permanent and reconsider our membership in the organization.”
Since then, he has continued to criticize the organization, saying:
“The World Health Organization has repeatedly made claims about the coronavirus that were either grossly inaccurate or misleading. Throughout this crisis, the World Health Organization has been curiously insistent on praising China for its alleged ‘transparency.'”
The total break from the WHO was probably music to the ears of many conservatives. The WHO is well-known as an organization that promotes both contraception and abortion throughout the world. The World Health Organization even said that abortion is “essential” during the coronavirus pandemic.
Some prominent people believe China has received favorable treatment from the WHO, even as it has long violated basic human rights and has a strict control over the population.
The head of the Population Research Institute, Steve Mosher, has said the top officials within the WHO have been “carrying water” for China’s regime. He points to the fact that the organization has repeatedly claimed the coronavirus didn’t start in China, and has also praised China’s leadership for how it handled the outbreak.
