(PresidentialInsider.com)- Back in March, Republican Senator Ted Cruz had written an op-ed at Fox News urging the International Olympic Committee to reconsider allowing China to host the upcoming 2022 Winter Games. He urged the committee to come to its senses and move games to a different city.
When that didn’t happen, Ted Cruz went against the tide of voices calling for the US Olympic Team to boycott the Beijing Olympics. In June, after President Trump said in an interview that the US shouldn’t boycott the games, Cruz tweeted his agreement, saying instead of boycotting, the US Team should go to Beijing, compete, and “kick their commie asses.”
This weekend on “Face the Nation,” while discussing China’s human rights violations and the suspicious disappearance of Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai, Cruz repeated his support for the US Team playing in Beijing, once again saying they compete and “kick their commie asses.”
Senator Cruz explained that going to the Beijing Olympics would allow the US to show the same kind of courage the Women’s Tennis Association has been showing over Peng’s disappearance. Cruz said that the United States has to call out China’s history of human rights abuses and genocide, as well as speak the truth about China’s complicity in the COVID-19 pandemic.
He argued that it would be a mistake to boycott the Olympics the way that Jimmy Carter boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Cruz said all a boycott does is punish the athletes who have prepared and practiced their entire lives to make it to the Olympics.
At the same time, Cruz does support the idea of having a diplomatic boycott allowing the athletes to still compete while not sending any representatives from the US government.
