(PresidentialInsider.com)- Populist Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia recently caused a stir by calling on Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to resign from the Supreme Court if she is unable to attend oral arguments in person – a confusing take for somebody who presumably knows that any position on the Supreme Court would be replaced by sitting President Joe Biden.
Unless, of course, Rep. Greene thinks that any nomination put forward by President Joe Biden could be blocked by the Republicans in the event of big GOP victories in this year’s midterm elections.
Justice Sotomayor has yet been unable to attend in-person oral arguments over concerns about catching COVID-19, given the fact that she suffers from diabetes. Some reports have also argued that Sotomayor’s decision to stay remote was partly prompted by Justice Neil Gorsuch’s decision to stop wearing a face mask. The claim, however, was denied in a statement issued by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
Writing on free speech social media platform GETTR, Rep. Greene suggested that if the claim was true then Sotomayor is “not fit to serve on the Supreme Court and should step down.”
“Stop punishing healthy people with masking and vaccine mandates,” she added.
Rep. Green probably has more to be mad at Justice Sotomayor about, however. The Supreme Court justice was one of just three members of the bench to vote in favor of upholding President Joe Biden’s unpopular vaccine mandate for businesses with more than 100 employees. The Court voted 6-3 against the policy, effectively striking down the rule and allowing business to decide their own COVID vaccination policies instead.
