A Minnesota elementary school that counts among its student body a number of Somali refugees will be including among its school spirit swag hijabs featuring the school mascot, Buster the Bulldog.
In addition to selling school spirit T-shirts, this year William Byrne Elementary school in Burnsville, Minnesota will be selling school spirit hijabs for six dollars. The hijabs will come in two sizes and colors, and some designs even include sparkles.
According to the school’s spirit wear coordinator, parent volunteer Carla Valadez, last year, the school’s Somali cultural liaison, Maryan Ali, suggested that the Parent Teacher Organization find a way to provide school spirit wear for Somali Muslim girls that included Buster the Bulldog on it.
Valadez worked with the PTO and with Maryan Ali to find vendors to produce the school hijabs.
One Somali parent told the local news outlet KARE-TV that he was grateful to the school for accommodating his daughter.
