(PresidentialInsider.com)- After her former chief of staff criticized her refusal to respond to the violence during the January 6 riot at the Capitol, former First Lady Melania Trump hit back in a scathing statement.
Stephanie Grisham, who served as Melania’s chief of staff, recently claimed the First Lady didn’t want to condemn the violence happening at the Capitol during the January 6 riot. In late June, she tweeted a screen capture showing a text message exchange between her and Melania in which Grisham asked someone named “MT,” “Do you want to tweet that peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness & violence?”
The texted one-word reply was, “No.”
In her responding statement, Melania said she had not been aware of what was happening at the Capitol because she was busy “fulfilling one of my duties as First Lady,” namely, coordinating the archive photographs of the White House renovations at the time of the riot.
Melania said she had always been supportive of her former chief of staff, including standing behind Grisham and welcoming her back to the East Wing “after her failed stint as White House Press Secretary.”
In her statement, Melania said Grisham wasn’t even in the White House on January 6. She called her behavior a “dereliction of duty” in her role as chief of staff by not briefing Melania on the events of January 6.
Accusing Grisham of betrayal, Melania said her recent actions against her and the former president are “a last-ditch attempt to resuscitate her ruined career and reputation.”
The former First Lady said she has always condemned violence, adding that if she had been “fully informed” by her chief of staff about what was happening at the Capitol, she would have denounced the violence immediately.
When she conceded that Grisham’s behavior was “disappointing,” Melania said it doesn’t come as a surprise. She said Grisham isn’t the first former staffer to try to “maintain relevancy and profit by using my name to create a false narrative.”
