(AmericanPoliticalDaily.Com)- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio made the shocking announcement on Wednesday that he is prepared to start furloughing or laying off essential employees in New York City. Democratic Mayor de Blasio said he would be forced to take the radical action if the city doesn’t start receiving funds from the federal government to replace the money used in the fight against the coronavirus.
“Right now what I’m staring down the barrel of, and cities and states all over the country, people are either acting on furloughs and layoffs or preparing for furloughs or layoffs of the exact people who have been the heroes in this crisis who we should be celebrating and supporting – first responders, the health care workers, the educators,” he told CNN.
He asked how he can support the workers without money, and while he’s right, that isn’t the whole story.
New York City may not have the money to pay workers, but President Donald Trump made it clear the federal government isn’t willing to bail out cities and states run into the ground by Democrats. The federal government continues to provide financial support to cover the cost of the coronavirus, including cash injections directly to the American workforce but is stopping short of bailing out states that have long been looking for a way out of the deficit hole they dug themselves into.
President Donald Trump said in an interview on Monday with the New York Post that it would be unfair to bail out Democrat-run states that have run out of money because it would be unfair to Republican states that have been managed properly.
“I think Congress is inclined to do a lot of things but I don’t think they’re inclined to do bailouts,” Trump told the Post. “A bailout is different than, you know, reimbursing for the plague.”
He also explained that it’s “not fair to the Republicans because all the states that need help – they’re run by Democrats in every case.”
“Florida is doing phenomenal, Texas is doing phenomenal, the Midwest is, you know, fantastic – very little debt.”
Trump said that New York, California, and Illinois all have tremendous debt…and are all run by Democrats.
“I don’t think the Republicans want to be in a position where they bail out states that are, that have been mismanaged over a long period of time,” he added.
Why does Mayor de Blasio think the government should bail him out when he and his Democratic colleagues have governed so badly that the state and city are in huge debt even without the coronavirus?
