(PresidentialInsider.com)- The federal grand jury investigating the events leading up to the January 6 Capitol riot has expanded its ongoing probe to include former President Trump’s leadership PAC, Save America.
According to ABC News, “sources with direct knowledge” said that in recent weeks, the grand jury is looking into the PAC’s formation and fundraising and has subpoenaed documents, records, and testimony from several potential witnesses.
The subpoenas are seeking to understand the timeline of the PAC’s formation and how the money is both received and spent.
Trump’s Save America PAC has often solicited donations by promoting the former president’s claims about the 2020 elections. After the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago last month, the PAC sent out a fundraising email urging supporters to donate to stand with Trump against “this NEVERENDING WITCH HUNT.”
According to the Washington Post, in the two days following the FBI raid, the leadership PAC raised over $1 million.
Among those subpoenaed to testify are two former Trump White House staffers, William Russell and Beau Harrison.
The Save America committee was established just days after the 2020 election. According to the PAC’s FEC filing, the new committee was affiliated with the Trump campaign and the Trump Make America Great Committee.
As with other political action committees, leadership PACs like Save America can only accept up to $5,000 per individual donor. Since its start, Save America PAC has received over $135 million, including transfers from affiliated committees.
As of the end of July, Save America reported having just under $100 million in cash on hand.
The House January 6 select committee has claimed that the PAC is using Trump’s claims about the 2020 election to raise millions of dollars.
Select Committee member Zoe Lofgren said at a recent hearing that their investigation found evidence that Trump and his surrogates “misled voters as to where their funds would go and what they would be used for.”
